Glaucoma is a condition in which the fluid that normally flows through the anterior (front) of the eye fails to drain as needed, causing added pressure on the optic nerve. The optic nerve is sensitive to trauma from pressure. Left untreated, vision deteriorates and eventually ceases.
Glaucoma can give little to no warning of its presence as symptoms are rarely present in its early stages. In general, glaucoma arises in both eyes, but the pressure on the optic nerve usually begins in one eye first. Slight vision changes will occur and areas in the peripheral vision can be affected.
People of all ages and races are susceptible to glaucoma. Those who are at a higher risk of developing the disease are people who have severe nearsightedness, are diabetic, are over the age of 35 or have a relative who has also had the disease. African-Americans are also at an increased risk of developing glaucoma. Fortunately, several tests such as tonometry, ophthalmoscopy, perimetry and gonioscopy can detect glaucoma.
Treatment methods can vary from medication to laser surgery. Medication comes in the form of pills or eye drops and are used to slow the production of fluid or by enhancing the flow where it drains. Dr. Martinelli offers various medical treatments which can help lower your intra-ocular pressure. Many newer medications are now only needed once a day and rarely have long-term or systemic side effects. The solution is placed in the eye once a day and rarely has long-term side effects. Dr. Martinelli can determine if this is a proper course of treatment for your case.
Laser surgery to treat the drainage canal is also an option and may lessen the need for medications. The surgeons at Martinelli Eye and Laser Centers also perform a procedure known as SLT, or Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty. Laser light is used to focus on cells that contain melanin. The procedure uses the body’s own healing response to improve fluid movement. By doing so, this reduces the pressure in the eye.
